“The High Break Beats”

On Saturday, April 5th we hosted The High Breaks as they created a live recording of their collaborative project, “The High Break Beats”, for our latest installment of TRS Live.

The High Breaks are a surf band consisting of guitarist Matt Hagen, bassist Kevin Lynam and drummer Todd Gevry. For this collaboration they teamed up with DJ Kanganade, rapper Boxguts, rapper Tha Truth, freestyle extraordinaire Humble, producer Rico James and voice over artist Kris Brown. Together, they are “The High Break Beats”

The High Break Beats combine the quick bop of surf music with turntablism (the art of percussively scratching vinyl records) which is traditionally found in hip-hop. DJ Kanganade’s masterful execution of scratching complements the tight, reverb laden compositions of The High Breaks as added percussion. In addition to The High Breaks’ original take on surf music, “The High Break Beats” incorporate a slight genre shift into more down tempo, tropical grooves that feature lyrical rap work by guest MC’s. The result is a collective and cohesive example of creative intent.
